Cutting edge laboratories

Testing and certification requires top experts and state-of-the-art laboratories. FM's 1,600-acre (648 ha) Research Campus is home to such research facilities and testing laboratories that hyper-focus on loss prevention to ensure only verified products and services earn the FM APPROVED certification mark.

Here's what you need to know about our capabilities:

  • Loss prevention

FM Approvals tests and certifies that fire protection devices and systems will work as intended when properly installed and maintained, whether products can limit fire spread and help buildings withstand the elements, and that electrical equipment used in hazardous or explosive environments will function properly when needed.

  • Cybersecurity of connected devices

Products that complete FM Approvals’ cybersecurity certification program have verification of designed-in security, successful vulnerability identification testing, and robustness against cybersecurity attacks. These FM Approved products span industrial control systems (ICS), physical devices with cloud-based processes (IoT), and intelligent factory and building management systems (IIoT).

  • Climate resilience

In the face of more impactful climate events, it is not adequate to state a property loss prevention solution should work. FM Approvals testing and certification verifies that properly installed solutions will perform as expected under the toughest conditions – including those conditions consistent with natural hazards that are consistently more frequent and severe.
