The data center industry is experiencing rapid growth, but this expansion comes with significant risks. These include natural disasters, cyber-attacks and the evolving role of artificial intelligence. How do these challenges affect your business, and what obstacles are hindering your growth?

Key insights from FM's data center experts

Adrian Oxley, staff vice president, senior engineering technical specialist, and Paul Heisel, assistant vice president, high-hazard occupancy specialist, addressed these pressing questions during a webinar titled "Data Centers: Tackling the Risks."

The webinar underscored the importance of developing and implementing strategies to mitigate data center risks and prevent costly disruptions for businesses worldwide. Oxley and Heisel discussed critical industry trends and key risks that you need to be aware of, emphasizing the necessity of a forward-thinking partnership approach to effectively maintain and protect data center facilities. Oxley highlighted that, according to Forbes, downtime costs can reach up to $9,000 per minute.

Heisel referenced the Texas Freeze of 2021, illustrating how FM's data center clients were prepared and proactively avoided downtime during this unprecedented natural catastrophe.

Research today for tomorrow’s data centers

They also shared insights into FM's thorough engineering research and testing efforts, aimed at developing cost-effective risk mitigation solutions based on client feedback. At FM's U.S. Research Campus in West Glocester, Rhode Island; its Science and Technology Center, Americas, in Norwood, Massachusetts; and its Science and Technology Centre, Asia Pacific, FM’s research teams are investigating various solutions to enhance resilience in this evolving data center landscape. These include:

  • Development of a large-scale fire test protocol for Li-Ion uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems used in data centers.
  • Analysis of immersion cooling systems utilizing dielectric mineral oils.
  • Evaluation of thermal runaway risks associated with Li-Ion batteries.
  • Guidance on renewable energy technology to support utility-scale installations of PV ground-mounted solar, onshore wind and battery energy storage systems.
  • Advanced risk mitigation strategies and specialized insurance coverage for data center equipment protection, including fire suppression systems, environmental controls, power management and physical security.

By staying ahead of these risks and implementing innovative solutions, you can ensure the resilience and reliability of your data center operations.
